Nogales Lab, MCB and Computer Science Junior, 2017

Professor Nogales says, "Dvir has been in my lab since May 2016 and has been phenomenal ever since. He has made tremendous strides towards understanding and mastering several aspects of research in my lab and has been extremely productive during this time."

Reif says, "I have been working in the Nogales lab since Summer 2016 through this academic year through URAP, working with a postdoctoral fellow, Vignesh Kasinath, and another undergraduate, Ashlee Feng. My work is focused on understanding the structure and function of Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2). So far we have been successful not just in the biochemical characterization which involves molecular cloning and protein purification, but also in preliminary electron microscopy studies (Negative stain and Cryo-EM). We have found conclusive evidence for the presence of PRC2 dimers which had previously only been postulated. Currently we are investigating the functional significance of these dimers."

Reif continues, "before joining the lab, I was initially unsure of what my plans for the future after undergrad would be and thought that joining a lab would give me more to go off of. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much I was learning in so short a time compared to lab courses I have taken, and I have enjoyed all of my time at the lab. Due to all of of my experiences at the Nogales lab, working alongside the amazing members of the lab, I plan to continue on in school to get a phD."
